Why does everyone always hate on voltorb?
Even though the common opinion on voltorb is "lol it's just a ball with eyes", I think its design is actually reasonably complex. The furrowed brow has a sense of depth, and the scuff marks make it look like an actual physical object. The way it's drawn at an angle is also clever; as it is a ball, it's hand-sized and low to the ground, so the angle shows how voltorb would appear to someone who is kneeling down to pick it up.

Foongus/amoongus do work as cooler mimics, but back when it was just voltorb/electrode they did their job well. In RSE/FRLG they'd always paralyze something when they came out, and the ones that could explode were a pain in the ass to deal with too.
They were good mimics since they just sprung up, outsped whatever you had, then fucked with it by exploding or statusing it.

Yeah I'd say voltorb/electrode fills the mimic niche a lot better than foongus. The basic idea behind a mimic is that it looks like treasure, but when you touch it if freezes you in place and then fucks you up with superior speed and power.
If we're using D&D as a reference, foongus/amoongus are more similar to a violet fungus than they are to a mimic.
