My name is John Monsterdesign, PhD graduate of John Gamefreak's School of Pokemon Design, major in both Pokemon Design and Pokemon Critique. People don't often realize it, but every Pokemon is overdesigned, and also garbage. Now, not everyone can tell at first, but if you're someone like me who's been trained and educated on the matter, and has had decades of experience in playing Pokemon Red Version on the Game Boy, you begin to develop an eye for these sort of things.
Take Oddish, for example. Everyone loves Oddish, and not without reason. Oddish is one of the original 151 Pokemon, a trait that really sets it apart from most. Most people will also take note of its simple, round body, and tiny, beady eyes. In addition, its legs are thin and, along with the feet, and simply drawn. Oddish couldn't possibly be overdesigned, right? Wrong.
A central aspect of Oddish's design, the leaves on its head, stem from a concept that we in the industry like to call "communicating an idea". Oddish is a Grass-type, but if Oddish were just a round blue ball with legs, how would anybody be able to tell? That's why the designer added Oddish's leaves, in order to communicate to you, the player, that Oddish is, indeed, a Grass-type. However, the designer made one fatal mistake. You only need ONE leaf in order to convey Oddish's typing to the player as simply as possible. Any more and the player may become confused. Remember, if something can be done simpler, then it must. Otherwise it's just bad design.
Above I've included a file of my new and improved Oddish concept. Make sure to save it onto your floppy drive for later viewing.

Zygarde 100% has a more complex design than Obelisk, Origin Giratina has a more complex design than Slifer. Only Ra lacks a mon with a more complex design and a similar body shape, and even then the Sphere Mode and Immortal Phoenix mode are simple enough to pass.

Some change is good, some is bad. Physical and special split is almost unanimously praised. Many new pokemon receive nothing but praise on my part. I'm not going to pretend the event legendaries haven't gone in a dumb direction.

Sure, but either you accept this has happened or you give up at Gen III. What's done is done, and if people can't get themselves to like any new Pokemon because they don't look like Gen I Pokemon then whatever I guess. Wanting them to go back is arguably worse because then you're making the ratio of Pokemon that "conflict" even wider. Besides, the change isn't even that bad. Like you said, not all Pokemon in Gen I were simple, and while some things have changed, like the designs looking a bit less organic, new Pokemon don't really look bad when put next to old Pokemon, not nearly as bad as Reshiram would put next to Ra.

Obviously Pikachu is over designed. Red spots were obviously trying too hard to be cool, so there goes them. After the series of seizures from Pokemon, a lightning bolt was considered offensive, so his tail was removed. Pikachu's ears obviously serve no point, so those were removed. Paranoid mothers found arms too "provocative" so Nintendo was forced to cut those out. Behold the new and improved Pikachu.
