The last time we got new evolutions for old mons we got shitmons like Lickilicky and Electivire, which fans have been shitting on since day one
Now we get much better ways to use old pokemon (with the only complete wastes being Audino and Latios, but latios wasn't getting an evo to begin with) like Sabeleye and Mawile and what have, whose BST increases of 100 in all likelihood exceed what we would've gotten had they just been regular evos.
You can hate their designs and their raw power but "muh potential future evo" is a shit argument. I could easily say that Magmortar ruined Magmar's potential for getting a good evo because Magmortar is garbage.

I hate megas, but not as much as I hate trade evos or event Pokemon. A gimmick is a gimmick but let's not pretend Pokemon isn't built from the ground up on a mountain of gimmicks.

What I meant was that Sylveon was a bad comparison since it isn't really extending the line like a new evolution or mega would, it's just another path on an already existing evolution tree. Since Eevee already had several evolutions, it wasn't in the position of possibly getting a mega outside of awful fan games.
You're right, Sylveon is a normal evolution to a Pokemon introduced alongside megas, but in this case it wasn't a choice between a new evolution or a mega. Every time they've actually had that choice, they've opted for a mega.
The original anon may have also meant that they will invariably continue to add megas instead of new evolutions, but I don't see any reason why that has to be the case. I just feel bad for mons like Absol, Sableye, and Audino that already got that treatment.
