Guys I have a dilemma. I recently got back into Pokémon so decided to play some of the older (ish) games. I've just finished Platinum and I now don't know what to play - Soul Silver or Black/Black 2.
My plan was to go Black, SS, Black 2, but I've heard that gen 5 is terrible and not even worth playing.

I've already started Black and got up to the 4th gym but I just can't seem to get into it as much as I did with Platinum or Alpha Sapphire. Worth continuing?

HGSS is the best experience you can have, especially since you can even get things like Mamoswine, Yanmega, and Tangrowth before the E4.
Gen 5 is pretty soulless, with awful starters and so many rehashes of Gen 1 Pokemon. If you really want to play it, just do Black 2.
Gen 5 is the Marmite of Pokemon, you either love it or hate it. Its worth giving it a shot but BW makes oldcomers feel really alienated because only Gen 5 Pokemon are obtainable throughout the main story. If you do play B and B2 you should play SS in between so you don't get bored of Unova.

Well then you need to start listening to people other than /vp/ shitposters. There are some valid complaints with Gen V (as there are with every game) but most people think it's the best in the series, particularly BW2.

The most common reason people bash Gen 5 is because of the Pokemon introduced in Gen 5 which people think has the worst designs. That's what I think at least.
But if you ask me, you should play BW. Gen 5 isn't my favorite Gen, but its a close second. BW has one of my favorite main games being more story oriented then other Gens. BW2 has my favorite (postgame) content by far. I think BW(2) perfected a lot of things regarding Pokemon.
I don't think the designs of the Pokemon are even that bad. Sure, there are some Pokemon which are pretty "meh" but Gen 5 brought a lot of good designed Pokemon as well.
People are really decided when it comes to which Gen is the best and which Gen is the worst. You should try each Gen for yourself and decide your own opinion.

Gen V was fucking terrible.
It's not because of the Pokemon, even though the starters are bland. (Pure water/pure grass/fire-fighting is the worst thing they could have done)
It's because of the fucking story. It's absolutely Godawful, and it forces itself upon you at every opportunity.
You can say that every other generation has a bad story, but it's much worse when the game forces it down your throat at every opportunity.
Unova as a region is also terrible. Gimmick caves and long-ass bridges everywhere. The bridges only exist to say "look at our pretty graphics!!!" but it backfires because Gen V has the ugliest mishmash of 2D sprites and 3D models.
Speaking of the sprites, all the overworld character sprites are in T-poses for some strange reason, which looks awkward as fuck. The battle sprites are "constantly animated" so they're just breathing and lack any personality whatsoever.
Gen V was absolutely terrible, and I wouldn't want anyone to have to suffer through that mess of a game.

gen 5 is the best gen and the only one that actually bothered trying to make a story
some of the pokemon designs are bad but some of them are among the best, and at least in B/W they didn't need to pad out the game with old pokemon like gen 4 and 6
