Just my personal thoughts about the pokemon world. I figure what makes the game MCs "heroes of the story" is the fact that they easily train strong teams of six pokes and win gyms/leagues. It's pretty blatantly implied that not everyone has such an easy time training pokemon, especially of different types, and almost no other trainer you encounter has a full team. Even in-game mechanics show that

>get money by winning battles
if you and your pokemon are not the best battlers, it's highly likely you wouldn't go the battling route... or maybe wouldn't even be interested. My favorite parts of the Pokemon games are exploring new routes and areas, imagining the RP-esque adventure traveling around. For that, I'd rather have a small, but very in-synch team. Just seems more believable to me that not everyone (and not me) would be able to handle six extremely powerful half-tame pokemon monsters.
