I would also like to throw my hat into the ring to say that ORAS is the best.
Now, don't get me wrong, the game is still really easy. And if I wasn't limiting myself to monotype, I would've totally used that Taillow with Boomburst I caught on Route 104 and made it even easier. But between the vastly improved graphics, the superior mechanics, better writing (I mean character writing, the plot was as stupid as ever), and AreaDex making catching Pokémon SO much more fun, I just had more fun with ORAS than any of the other games.

Even under maximum delusion, I can only feel that I enjoyed all of them equally. Nothing about any of them diminished anything for me, not even X/Y or OR/AS. It is disappointing to not have anything to do in the postgame, but I was still satisfied. I guess ignorance is bliss after all, but nothing can restore that for me now.

No. It's objectively agreed that everyone has their own favourites and their own least-favourites, and something like "What game is the best" is a bad question.
For example, HGSS is my LEAST favourite of the post-Gen3 games, because I couldn't get over its horrible balance. It has the same big problem Gen2 had, where there's a massive difficulty spike after the Pokémon League, and then a progressive difficulty drop into easier-than-XY territory as you go along. Up until Mt Silver or so, that is.

So I have a question: do the people who put Emerald and Platinum as significantly more fun than their predecessors actually remember them thinking RS/DP were "Man, this is pretty great" and E/Pt were "HOLY CRAP THIS IS AMAZING", or are you guys just saying they're significantly more fun because you want to acknowledge they're better games?
Because when I played them, I really didn't think much other than "They're basically the same games as the one I already played".

It's a technicality in both instances. The story is more complete in both. As for gameplay, Emerald introduced gym leader rematches, and Platinum actually utilizes all of the 4th gen pokes, along with putting in other older pokes for greater diversity.

Haven't played D/P, but with R/S and E, what happened was that I played Sapphire on release, and after playing it for a few years, I never touched it again. When I picked Emerald over half a decade later, I found the game more enjoyable than I remembered Sapphire being. If I went back to Sapphire now, I might like it equally, but I have no idea.

There's some things that trancend tastes in my opinion. For example, I'm not a fan of Emerald, but I know that it probably deserves no less than top 5 best, even if it wouldnt be in my personal top 5.
