Turns out the reason these designs are so shitty is because they're all based off Japanese puns.
That sad bird thing with the face on its stomach is based off of "tohoho" (onomatopoeia for being bummed out) and "hototogisu" (japanese name for the bird it's based off: the lesser cuckoo).

Yokai Watch copy and pastes that fucking cat so much that half the mons are just recolors. Pikachu Libre is at least still a Pikachu, they don't give it a different dex number, stats, etc. Every "Jibanyan" is a different Yokai. Imagine if Pokemon had a feature where you could fuse any Pokemon with Pikachu, and get a recolored Pikachu that "counts" as another Pokemon. People would be beyond pissed off.
