There wasn't that much filler. The stretch in the last two Gyms of DP had the Ash Vs. Paul 6 on 6, the last few Contests for Dawn, Ash's pokemon evolving, the Team Galactic climax, Brandon the Pyramid King returning and so forth.

The companions in XY are better, but the ones in DP still weren't bad in comparison. Also, XY's rivals are utterly underwhelming, with maybe the exception of Alan who isn't even a Pokémon League candidate at this point. DP just had higher stakes, more tension and stuff established very early on in the series that actually came into play in the endgame.
But XY is still #2 among Pokémon anime series, or at the very, very least tied with Indigo League, though they're both hard and unfair to compare.

I watched up to some johto as a kid then stopped but started rewatching it on and off for almost 2 years now to have something to do while shiny hatching.
Original and Orange Islands were nostalgic and charming
Johto was pretty awful just the league was ok.
Hoenn was a little up or down at times but I liked May. Max was annoying as shit.
Battle Frontier was awkward though it had some good battles.
I'm 5 badges into D&P now and its really good, better than the original in my opinion. Recurring characters that matter, best girl so far, Piplup is pretty likeable as a shouldermon and Ash's Chimchar has actual character and backstory, I could go on it just feels like shit is actually going on and developing instead of Ash just being stupid every episode.
I highly recommend anyone give at least DP a try as so far it hasn't dissapointed
