Look at most of the anime fights. Every participant looks tough and capable, and manages to truck through even the most brutal hits.
But then this scrubby, weak-ass Charmander gets biten on the face and you see what happens when you make a Pokemon fight and they have literally no clue how. They just scream and suffer.
It was an uncomfortable realization for a lot of people. The realization that the fights are actually fights.

I think the problem is that most of us are used to the battles from the ashnime, where most of the attacks seem harmless in the long run. Then here comes Origins and the first battle we ever encounter is on a whole different level, where you actually feel like the Pokemon is actually in danger. See, the only thing Red had to do at that point was give up and recall Charmander, and it would be over.
