He'd be tagging along as a way of researching the new types of Pokemon found in the region, but would still have some form of friendly rivalry towards Ash as they travel together.

While I do wish this would happen, Ash's traveling companions are pretty much exclusive to characters from that gen. Maybe some form of marketing strategy? I'm not sure, but we'd still have Brock if we didn't have this current way of doing things. We don't even get cameos from previous gen characters like we used to between gens 1 and 4.

Unless if you count the flashback in BW, the last time Gary made an appearance in the anime where he aided Professor Rowan in protecting Azelf in DP152. That episode aired almost 7 years ago, and we haven't heard any word from him since.
