I don't know what they were thinking with the whole quadrupedal thing. That would work for another concept, but not one that requires it to convincingly act like a samurai. And while it CAN stand up on two legs to use its swords, it's like watching a bear walk around on two legs. It's capable of doing so, but it just looks awkward.

The problem isn't the mid-stage, the problem is that the oshawott line are supposed to be swordsmen but the final form has the most counterproductive body structure for swordplay that they could've come up with. Dewott wearing a Shellmet wouldn't fix that.

You guys do know that Samurott isn't a quadruped, right? It's resting stance is quadrupedal, sure, but it can assume a bipedal stance to fight. It's similar to how a gorilla may prefer to walk quadrupedally but can become bipedal when necessary. It can do both quadrupedal and bipedal fighting, and that's part of its design - quadrupedal to reflect a mounted swordsman on a horse, and bipedal to reflect hand-to-hand dismounted combat.

It's closer to a bear than a gorilla in that regard. And while it can stand up on its hind legs, the design still isn't conducive towards being a swordsman. It is a failure as a design in that it doesn't properly convey its concept at a glance. You should not have to rely on animations or supplementary art in order to understand such things.

Also, like I said, making it primarily quadrupedal makes sense. It covers the horseman theme as well as the swordsman theme, and it also conveys a lot of power in my opinion. Like its body is so powerful and heavy that it must stand quadrupedally in most cases, but when I does stand up it's time to kick ass, in the same way that a bear or gorilla could wreck your shit standing up.

Thankfully I thought to use the level 15 event Keldeo instead of any of the other starters in BW2 so I got to use the Water/Fighting swordsman starter that was meant to be. The sword is a part of the leg armor though. It isn't entirely separate material since Samurott can use it's swords to defend itself/deflect attacks(like Pikachu's Tbolt in the anime). The swords is the armor's way of saying "this armor doesn't just defend, but can attack too". Just like how it's pre evos Scallops provided offensive and defensive benefits.

I know where the sword is supposed to be. But they designed it so the sword has to grow at least twice its size when unsheathed, as your gif shows, when there is a completely sensible and more intimidating sword on it's head which I think most people initially assumed was the sword in the first place.
I think the big issue with it besides it being quadrupedal, is how its limbs awkwardly curve. It seems really impractical to stand on the hind legs and have arms which can use blades when they bend like bananas inwards. I know that its how it is with what its based on, but it just seems silly considering what its meant to represent as a theme.

Everyone knows that Samurott is a samurai otter, you idiot. Just saying, "b-but samurai!" isn't a good reason for the samurai design aspects which don't work with the otter design aspects. Samurai don't have katana coming off their helmet as a crest, but having a full sized sword there, as it already does, works a hell of a lot better for a samurai otter than having tiny daggers inside its leg armour that magically grow to broadsword size which it looks like it can't even reach.
