I played a rom hack which had staryu, Shroomish & Slugma (if I'm remembering correctly).
It was a really good choice, due to having a triangular relationship in both directions, allowing you to have an advantage and disadvantage with both of the other starters.
The rom also did a good job of changing movesets to be really fun, stuff like getting stab moves early, but not getting super overpowered moves too early.

Man I'm replaying Crystal emulator right now, GF gave the oddish line freaking nothing to use from leveling up in like the first 3 gens. Had Absorb and all the powders and that was like it until the 40's where it learned petal dance. Could learn Mega/Giga drain and Solarbeam through TM.
