No one bases it on the first stage of the starters, if anything its always based on the final stage. Charizard is a dragon, Typhlosion is a badger and I admit it isn't fitting, Blaziken is a chicken which still fits with the Rooster, Infernape is an ape but it has a tail so it's hard to really say, Emboar fits, and Delphox is based on a fox which is part of the canine family.

Why are some people so angry at the thought that maybe, just maybe, the designer takes inspiration from the chinese Zodiac?
I mean, being sure that they are is just as ridiculous. But being so set on the idea that they don't, and that it's just impossible, and that because it's not a 1:1 thing it can't be true is just being retarded. It's like saying "Fairies can't be real" or "Even if the name is Fairy in Japanese, I garantee you it won't be that in English".
