I really want to know what exactly they're doing to hurt themselves. I can see them just attacking everything around them at random, that seems like a state of confusion. Are they just punching themselves in the face?

I think the pokemon trying to use the selected move, but they're so confused that they end up hurting themselves through clumsiness instead.

although i imagine like everyone else said, falling over or injuries due to clumsiness.
i like to imagine them charging up a solarbeam or heatwave and it blows up in their face for the special attacks.
for physical attacks i just assume they're all like hi jump kick and they just punch a brick wall or something.
