Pretty accurate. They almost always cover starters and version mascots before anything else with a few exceptions at times (e.g. Magearna, Zoroark)

havent done so since when? i don't remember 3rd gen announcements but pretty much since gen 4 they showed us random pokemon (lucario, bonsly, weavile) before showing us starters or box legendaries.

"We more than likely will have movie news given the pattern we've seen through the February to May issues since X and Y were revealed. However they did tell us that Sun and Moon coverage will start this month so we would also get information on the games.
February 2013: Sylveon is revealed.
March 2013: Mewtwo revealed to be distributed for pre-ordering tickets to the Genesect movie.
April 2013: Mega Mewtwo Y is revealed as Mewtwo's "Awakened Form".
May 2013: Shiny Genesect revealed to be distributed alongside the movie. Gogoat, Fletchling, Pancham, Helioptile, Serena and Calem, the new Pokedex, AND Kalos are all revealed.

February 2016: Magearna is revealed to the world alongside a name change for the Volcanion movie featuring it. We also got the reveal of Sun and Moon two weeks later.
March 2016: Volcanion is revealed to be distributed for pre-ordering tickets for the movie and we also learn that the April issue of CoroCoro will begin the featured coverage of Sun and Moon.
April 2016: Sun and Moon news, possibly more information on Magearna such as typing and ability, maybe even some in-game screenshots?
May 2016: Sun and Moon coverage continues, we may see starters and or box legendaries?"

Either way they were still reveals for X and Y, they were still relevant to the games. Plus it was our first look at a brand new mechanic, even though we didn't know it at the time.
