That highly depends on if the bloat of new content easily affects the ability to battle with XYORAS or not.
With ORAS, it was just a few Megas, moves, items, and a couple things.
For SM, there's the possibility of getting a lot more items, abilities, megas, and even actual new Pokemon. Considering that we'll be able to trade Gen I Pokemon up to SM via Bank, it might be that there'd be something within the code in SM that'd allow for those transferred Pokemon to work.
This means that those transferred Pokemon from Gen I may only be compatible with SM due to certain conversions here and there.
When we consider all of this, it might be a bit too chaotic to think that SM would be able to battle/trade with ORAS, much less XY.
If there's too much bloat in regards to new content, then the ability to trade and/or battle with XYORAS wouldn't be there due to how messy things would be to figure out.

Gen II had the exact same tileset and overworld sprites as gen I. The only thing that was added was color for GBC compatibility, and a few new overworld sprites (eg. slowpoke and pine trees). Everything else was copy-pasted wholesale from gen I. The battle sprites were different, but that's to be expected, even within generations.
Gen II could send pokemon back to generation I (minus items and new Pokemon).
Generation I pokemon are vastly overrepresented in pre-E4 wild encounters, gym leader teams, and E4 teams in GSC. Even the lore makes heavy use of gen I pokemon (slowpoke cave, sprout tower, dragon's den, etc.).
If any of these things are also true for SM, it will just mean it is a new generation that has a bit more in common with its predessecor than most, just like Gen II was more a sequel to Gen I than something entirely new. But nobody denies that it's its own generation. This half generation bullshit has got to stop.

But there still are a countless number of things they can change. The model colors, the battle background textures, overworld models, etc. Gen 5 still changed graphically from gen 4 despite being on the same system and reusing some sprites.
