Types are a form of supernatural energy. They are what influence the physical traits of a Pokemon, NOT the other way around.
Flygon physically being an insectoid or Kingler being an arthropod mean little, because at their core they don't have the Bug type energy. Likewise Shuckle here and Accelgor are really reaching and can barely be considered bugs, but they have the energy and are thus Bug types.

I've grown mantises in my house before.
Everyone told me to release them after they hatched, so I released a bunch but I don't think any of them survived the rest of the year in NY.

Of course the point is to market for the kids, that's always been the goal, but ever since Gen1-2 they've wanted to maintain their aging audiences. I often see the increasingly-cartoonish designs be the "fault" regarding recent gens in genwars. I think BW was a nod to kids' higher aesthetic standards more than anything else. I mean, look how sleek the UI looks; and the dancing sprites; and the style in Pokemon design; and the gorgeous color palette. It's just dripping neo-shonen elements. When that didn't work as much as GF wanted it to, they took a sideways step with XY, and it's a perfectly constructed game falling in line with various other games that kids love to play these days.

The simplest way I could put it is it's a lot like Disney movies. They're considered movies geared for children, but are known to have adult themes and references and such. What GF did with BW is make it look sleeker, which (in theory) would attract a new generation of young children (who are growing up with much more modern games, therefore requiring a new aesthetic for Pokemon as a franchise) while maintaining the older audience.
