Arguments about nukes have become skewed. The bomb back then was bad, bordering on an atrocity but was a decision that saved lives on both sides. A textbook "needs of the many" situation from a philosophical perspective, and generally good military and political sense.
Today nukes are a whole different beast with way more ramifications and people don't seem redraw the distinction between what they can do today and what they did back then.
Overall, a hard decision at the time but the "right" one to make. The other decision would have avoided the debate over we have today, but at the expense of so many lives -needless expense, would argue people that would profess that we should have just nuked them.

In modern times nuclear weapons have the potential to destroy civilization, but they are also the ultimate counterbalance to global militarization. Without nuclear weapons, there is far less deterrent for war involving nuclear powers. There is no question we could easily have seen more conventional global wars in the 20th century without them.

Actually, I trying to say that Diamond was the last one I played, I'm actually playing Alpha Saphire now, too. I'm not a huge fan of AS's jubilant nature versus Diamond's more somber and melancholic overtones, but it makes for a nice change of pace. I also still can't believe they made 3D models for all 700+ pokemon. That's artistic dedication.
The postgame is much more engaging in Alpha Sapphire though, whereas prior generations pretty much just left you with the battle tower/frontier/whatever. It removes a lot of the feeling of drudgery that used to be associated with going back to catch stuff, IMO. To be honest, though, half of the reason I play now is for Head-it.

Closer to the end of the war the military would tell kids at schools and towns that it would be less disgraceful to the emperor to commit suicide than to accept surrender.
