Are defensive Megas fundamentally fucked? Think about it: as of right now GF doesn't allow the HP stat to change upon Mega Evolution. HP, Defense, and Sp Defense are all important to make a good defensive Pokémon. Whereas offense revolves around Attack, Sp Attack, and Speed, defense gets cucked out of HP.
So because of this GF has to hall major ass to make a viable defensive Pokémon mostly through abilities and such.
Just seems dumb. I can see a reason why adjusting HP isn't an option.

Still has no recovery besides Rest and a typing with no helpful resistances. It might be a bitch to kill, but it couldn't do much of anything in return, and it would still be total Taunt bait.
Still, I have to wonder if Power Trick would be any more useful considering it might actually be able to take a physical hit afterwards. Probably too slow though

No, HP is just one of many factors, Mega-sableye is one of the best defensive mega's and it's HP stat is absolutely garbage. It's not that big of a deal.
Plus, offense might revolve more around speed than defense does, but the extra speed is still really useful even on defensive mons.

Maybe you could make a case for venu and sable, but you're really grasping at straws here, bud.
I have high hopes for Mega Emboar if they do give all starters mega's at some point. It already has great HP, its just slacking in defenses or speed.
Personally if they could give it Drain Punch, I would love to use it as a bulky fucker.

Pokémon like Mawile and Sableye are what I'm getting at.
Sableye has doctored heavily but a great defensive ability that rules out a lot of residual damage and plus a type combination that was formerly without a weakness. The fucker still has only 50 base HP though and that's pretty disgusting.
Mawile has a similar problem but was handled similarly to Sableye: good type combo and ability albeit designed as more of a tank and less of a wall.
Both are still an example however of Pokémon who have to be doctored by their typing and ability to be a proper defensive Pokémon since HP doesn't get a boost from Mega Evolving. But that just illustrates my original point.

Megas aren't supposed to be flexible, you commit to a Mega your options are limited as is your mindgame in exchange for power.
That's basically the whole point of them existing the first place, to mitigate all the item/ability set-up fuckery that all the battles were distilling into.
Some players still choose to play Mega-free, myself included. I beat ubers with my Eevee team by hamming up choice items, focus band, and left-overs. The rest is just accurately predicting what attack they're going to use and switching in with whoever can absorb that attack type. Baton Pass the buff, repeat.
