As I'm sure you've seen, there are a shitton of threads showing off art for Pokémon species variations (pic related)

I've got quite a lot of time on my hands and was wondering if anyone would want to play or take part in creating a ROMhack with me to include these variations.

The idea would be to base it on fire red and give most pokemon 3 or 4 species variations. These variations would be similar to one another except with slight design/location/stat/moveset changes. As you can imagine, doing all 720 would be a pain in the ass, so I may limit it to the first couple of gens.

I like this idea as it seems actually feasible and relatively quick. If anyone has any suggestions for what to include I'd really appreciate it.

With spritework, some variations wouldn't come out well, for example the difference between Normal and Contest in your image(is there a reason none of those Venusaur have eyes?). It shouldn't be a problem as long as you keep it in mind.

I'd find it interesting enough to play. The only helping I could do is making the variant designs, if you needed anyone on that.

Oh, I agree. Some are just not possible. I think I'd pick those that differ a little more than contest and regular. Those porygon ones are pretty cute, for example. But yes, if this idea is received well having someone to make the designs would be fantastic.

Make it gen 1 mons only and a Fire Red hack. Variations can be all over, and they are the offspring of breeding combos. Maybe alter the egg groups a little, and make each variation have extra moves and small stat differences.

I think the limit is about 1000 for Fire Red. Even if you only had three variations, and only the first two gens, you're already hitting 750~.

I always said Pokemon should expand in subspecies and usability, we're already approaching a major character bloat.

Many gen II mons are completely unusable, Gamefreak should go back and polish underused mons.

Not him but I remember hearing about the Dex expansion fucking up around 1024, which is a multiple of 2 so it sounds like a reasonable number. That was a while ago and I don't know if they've pushed it further but I don't think there'd be a big need since you can include every Pokémon, every Mega, and then some Fakemon if you really wanted to, with that number.

copy and paste two or three times for each species with some slight editing of stats in PokeGen or whatever tool is used now, editing which Pokemon appear in which areas, editing the pokemon that trainers have

A shitload of sprites that you will burn out on

I've been working on idea that basically started as this and ventured into a slightly different area, so I got some tips.
Keep in mind how small sprites are, some variants wont be as noticeable.
Focus on pokemon with distinct patterns and breeds already. A liepard could be a snow leopard, cheetah, even maybe a leopard seal of sorts. So you could have it change types and attacks respectively.
Think routes first, then fill those with Pokemon. You don't want 20 Pokemon that could fit in a rain-forest route and then 1 or 2 in a desert. This will help you keep the types in check too.
Lastly typing. This is what made me really alter my idea in the end. When it comes down to it, these variants tend to always be of certain types. I see a ton of grass, flying and normal variants, because they vary so well in real life. People tend to be less creative with things like steel, electric, fighting, unless its a mix breed thing. Have a nice equal blend of Pokemon types.

I went from a direction of having several variations of a Pokemon to just 1 of each type. Pokemon adapted to their environment. There's about 300 total in the dex and basically every type combo is in it.

Not yet, got the idea around spring break. Its been going pretty steady tho, started learning Essentials over spring break and then creating it after work and class each day. Got a fully functioning game, and built maps up to the first gym so far. On paper, I have all the routes, cities, and pokedex plotted out.

Awesome, I was worried the Vulpix looked a bit too silly. I'm trying to make everything based on a certain concept. Poison/Electric Blitzle will be base on battery acid, Fairy/Ground cubone is base on the Midas touch fairytale, being a lonely Pokemon as everything it touches turns to gold. Electric/Water Azurill is stuck in a dark cave and has a fear of the dark, so adapted to have a glowing tail to soothe itself (nightlight idea). The Pokemon are influenced by their environment. The first route is a burnt forest with Pokemon that have gained a fire type. There's a city-side polluted area full of poison Pokemon, and steel types created by the city to populate the area and release air purifying stuff (based on bio-remediation).

Yea, I'm starting with mostly the easiest sprites, ones that are recolors and small changes, so that I have a bit of experience before moving into the more complex changes. Adding lots of tilesets too, such as water wells, birdhouses, and other scenery, all of which will be interactive.

I don't know what to do about this. Obsidian Aggron would look hella cool but in order to give every pokemon from gens 1-3 several variations it may break the dex expansion limit. Maybe I'll just go for Gen 1, and then do a Ruby hack another time.

Just do a select few from different gens. Having some pokemon unavailable is fine. This will help you choose actually creative ideas too, rather than trying to think of variations for a Pokemon that don't come naturally to you.

Look through the pokedex kinda slowly, thinking of ideas in your head. When you see a mon you got some ideas for, mark it off. If you want 3 variations, end up picking about 100 mons (not 100 families, you'll have about 40 or so families picked). That'll give you a dex of about 300, which will be a good variety but not complete hell to sprite.
