I'm generally pretty satisfied with the pokemon we have. I've got a load of favorites, there's easily a hand full of about 10 that I truly absolutely love. Not that I wouldnt mind new ones, but new pokemon are a total crap shoot. A new pokemon could be anything as rad as Metagross to as garbage as Slurpuff. Each individual pokemon can be anything from a 0 to a 10.
On the other hand, I've loved the majority of Mega's, even for pokemon that I've previously disliked. And, on the off chance that a pokemon that I love gets a shitty mega, I can just as easily continue to enjoy the non-mega variant.
Really, Mega's just have a higher chance of success.

I think they only had 72 new ones because they also focued a good amount on megas. I wouldn't expect this to change in gen 7. Probably 90 new pokemon with 20 megas, and people will say "it's 110 new pokemon, more than johto!"

I generally think Mega Evolutions are stupid inherently, and the fact that some Mega Evolutions look worse than the base Pokemon doesn't help. However, there are a few Pokemon who's Megas are both helpful in bringing them into the spotlight and aesthetically sound, so I can't hate Megas completely.

I hope Gamefreak does a little more retconning like they did with Gen 6 and changing hidden abilities. Pokemon like Banette and Steelix wouldn't be inherently boned. I mean, its not like their stats are a problem in a vaccuum.
They already mega'd all my favorites. I don't want somes that already decent (pic related) to mega, so I'm not that excited for it anymore.
