So, which game of the DS should I play? Everyone say Gen 4 is really slow and Gen 5 has one bad series and one good (B/W1 and B/W2 respectively).
I guess what I'm asking which one I can get the most value of whatever money I drop in?

Do not believe /vp/. Play Gen 5 in order. It feels odd paced at times, but it's enjoyable.
The experience, at the end of the day, is completely personal.

And I can't really say much for HeartGold and SoulSilver because I hate it, but the games look beautiful, and it's not boring unless you're me
Gen4 is cancer outside of Platinum. Even HGSS couldn't fix the cancer that is Johto level curve, actually they made it worse by boosting levels lategame. Get a gen5 game, BW1 if you prefer story, BW2 if you prefer mechanics and features.
B/W are good in their own right, even if the sequels are better.

Buy BW 1, then buy the sequel. Gen 5 was a solid gen all around. The 3DS also has the Pokemon Dream Radar(BW2 only) and PokeTranporter app which only the Gen 5 DS games are compatible with.
