2 and 4 both added more to the game than any other generation aside from gen 1, which started the series, but was so shit in every regard it doesn't matter. A lot of people regard gen 5 as the gen gamefreak started paying attention to competitve more, but honestly that started in gen 4, play platinum again if you don't believe me. (Gym leaders have competitive movesets, challenging level curve, introduced stealth rocks and many other game changing moves, bosses had pokemon with good IVs, etc). Gen 3 added nothing to the series except GBA graphics and is overhyped on /vp/ because the majority of people here right now are 17-19 years old. Seriously, Gen 2 added breeding, held items, dark and steel type, shinies, animations, friendship, genders for pokemon, genders for the protagonist, added 86 new moves, berries and more, fixed 99% of the problems with gen 1 regarding mechanics and type matchups, and can be played on an original gameboy just like red and blue. Gen 3 added double battles and abilities. Other than that, a mojority of the sprites are recolors of gen 2 sprites, and they removed night and day differences in the overworld, apricot balls, and pokemon animations (except for emerald) despite them being in crystal.
This is coming from someone who has been playing since the very beginning.
