Day 1 DLC costs money and locks away a substantial portion of the whole game. Event Pokemon are free and entirely used for trophy-collecting only. You can't use them online for ranked battles, they only exist to show off to your friends. And you don't even need event Pokemon to get the Pokedex completion awards.
