Dark type makes the most sense. Tyranitar is based on Godzilla, who is based on nuclear weapons. And seeing as dark-type generally represents evil and Japan is a country that has witnessed the evils of nuclear warfare first-hand, it makes sense that Tyranitar is part dark.

Tyranitar doesn't have any scales though. It makes as much sense being a Dragon pokemon as Nidoking or Rhydon do. And while Godzilla isn't necessarily evil, the thing it is based on (nukes) is considered "evil".

I only liked Pupitar in GSC, its line was rare and mysterious, Pupitar was weird the first time you were able to see amd use it. Then it became that one forgettable or 2nd stage form you want to skip as soon as possible in order to get the final stage like with Lombre, Vibrava, Loudred and Shelgon for example.
I mean, in GSC (with Stadium 2 speed options) I liked to train to L.100 almost every mon except he shitbugs, even Qwilfish was one of my top favs at the time.

Shell Smash is the best amongst those. Diamond Storm is just a somewhat better version of Stone Edge. Sucker Punch is eh. Most of what scares Tyranitar out are Fighting and Fairy type, both of which would resist that Sucker Punch.
