Lucario and Charizard aren't forced, they're just popular among little kids. Zoroark had the same treatment as Lucario at first but little kids didn't care about it so they abandoned it. The only Pokemon that is arguably forced is Pikachu (since they chose it as the mascot), but Pikachu is liked by everyone that isn't a hipster anyway.

As someone who works at a pre-school and after school care program and therefore probably talks to more children than the average /vp/ poster, I can tell you kids still like pokemon. It's never going to be Pokemania level again, but the average kid still knows what it is. I will admit most of the kids seem more into the tv show than the games, but I still know a handful of ours play.
