Platinum was gen 4.
DP didn't feel nearly as fluent or sleek. They were proof-of-concepts but were very slow in pace and aesthetic. Platinum did well to improve the designs and the improvements carried over into my favorite games, HG/SS.
D/P was the introduction, Platinum was the real game.
The whole introduction and playability of the other dimension, improvement in every direction, proper trainer theming (what the fuck was the d/p elite 4 doing?), faster playing speed, and lots of little features made platinum great. I play through it even now.

Personally, I just did not like the Pokemon designs, and I didn't like the feel of the world.
This is all incredibly subjective so it doesn't really matter, and if you like it that's great! But personally, the vast majority of the Gen IV Pokemon (With some exceptions: Torterra is still my absolute favorite starter; I really felt like most of the new evolutions to existing Pokemon weren't great, but Mismagius and Gallade were very fluid additions; Croagunk/Toxicroak are genuinely cool) just didn't have much feeling to their designs. It sounds vague, but overall it felt like the design work all just needed to be marginally improved - the ideas were there, but most designs just weren't executed well.
As for the world, I really like that the northmost region was supposed to feel colder and more mountainous, and a more piano-based soundtrack was a fantastically good idea, but this was only capitalized on for Snowpoint and Mt Coronet. Sinnoh just kinda felt bland to me - most of the cities lacked character, and whatever you can say about Unova and Kalos, at the very least each city had a very distinct feeling to it; I'm generalizing and I do think Sunyshore and Oreburgh were neat, but I really think that Jubilife, Hearthome, Veilstone, Canalave, and Floarma could have had a lot more flavor.
The games were fun and Platinum was moreso and a massive improvement, but the overall generation just felt a little bit lackluster compared to the others. Gen IV feels like the Twilight Princess of Pokemon, I guess. Perfectly solid and cool (And not bad at all!) but just slightly lacking heart?

The two snow routes towards Snowpoint were literally nothing but suffering. It took me like two and a half hours to get past them. Everyone confuses you, paralize up the ass, poison to make you lose even more time in battles and probably causes other shit I can't remember.
Not even the surf speed bothered me and I see that one constantly mentioned.
And if you don't pick Chimchar have fun getting the one fire Pokémon in the early-ish game, and have fun when it only learns Flame Wheel on Platinum. The early choices of Pokémon is pathetic. Shinx is basically a guarantee to be in literally everyone's team, and if you don't get a Starly then good fuckin luck dealing with fighters. The only other choice is doing the Spiritomb shenanigans for it to appear and it still only has Dream Eater which depends on the unreliability of Hypnosis.

It's slow, but so were HGSS.
The variety also sucked, I'm not just talking Ponyta here. I'm talking about how gen 3 and 4 just decided to remove 70% of all pokemon from the genepool.
Gen 1 had 150. Gen 2 had 220, gen 3 had 130 or so. Gen 4 I don't remember exactly. but this is, to me, the biggest issue.
It's a shame since the best two regions are Hoenn and Sinnoh
