Besides having a natural high defense naturally, it's good to have him bulk out on that so he can check any pyshical sweeper. Plant type also helps when trading to tank Close Combats which is a fairly popular choice.

You won't be able to take a Fireblast from an Arcanine or an Entei (both UU like Chestnaught), so Spdef doesn't matter that much. Ice Punch is also quite popular and it's a pyshical move.

So yeah, no reason to go SpDef.
