Liquids are used to measure an object's volume i.e. the measurement of space.

Water = Liquids

Makes sense. Outer space is as vast and endless as the ocean.

Yveltal is pretty obviously Dark/Flying, Xerneas is more debatable but Fairy definitely would've been plausible had we known about it when Xerneas was revealed. Personally I would've begged Xerneas as Steel/Grass or Steel/Psychic or something, its legs look kinda metallic.

Pearls form in clams so Palkia is Water.
The stuff like 'space is an ocean' are all tenuous as fuck because it relies on English as a language and in other languages that shit doesn't hold up. Especially with the legendaries, Gamefreak have said that they want them to be easily recognised regardless of language or culture, which is why their names are pretty much identical across most languages, so they'd want their designs and typing to fit with a theme that anyone of any language would understand.
