I know that GameFreak is incompetent as hell, but not like this. Do they even playtest their games at all?
IIRC the abilities are randomized at the start of battle and not set, explaining the idiocy.

Sheer Force only removes the recoil damage from Life Orb on the moves boosted by the ability. It does nothing for status-inducing Orbs.

Apparently there were a lot of bugs and mistakes in this game
His original Challenge Mode team had a Conkeldurr with Guts instead. I guess when they changed his ability for rematches, they didn't change the item either
Here, team fixed.
This happens in the Battle Facilities occasionally, too. Either gen V or VI had a Toxic Orb Breloom without Poison Heal.
