I really like what was done for Mega Absol. Taking a pokemon with a heavy physical offensive bent and shitty bulk, trying to make it mixed, giving it an ability that works best on a pokemon with high staying power, and then neglecting to increase its defenses at all.

I have never really understood this argument. I assume you mean this in the "It just gets bigger!" sense? I like Tangela a lot. If Tangrowth had taken its design in a completely different direction, or worse, ruined it completely by having the vines retract and reveal the entire body underneath them, I wouldn't like it. Sometimes more of the same isn't a bad thing.
It's kind of like the whole Scyther/Scizor thing. Scizor is pretty cool, but I hate the fact that it changed nearly everything I liked about Scyther. Change isn't always for the better.

The real problem is thinking that Mega evolution precludes new permanent evolutionary stages.
Think of Mega evolution more like Armor digi-volutions - temporary increase in power into an alternate form. Mega Absol just represents what happens when an Absol has the potential and the power to evolve, but doesn't have the right catalysts for normal, permanent evolution.
