I'm a dedicated Waterfag when it comes to starters and I did choose Piplup every time I played DPP but Torterra's become an exception over the years. It's my favorite of all the starters now, though I can't say I've actually used it in-game or in battles much.

What annoys me about basically all the grass starters is that they get such a shit movepool. Meganium is bottom of the barrel, but Venusaur and Serperior also only get Grass type offensive moves. Without tm's they're shit.
Sceptile has the best movepool except it's all physical attacks and it only gets a few damaging special type moves of which it can only learn 1 by level up. Torterra and Chesnaught at least have some variety going on.
Compared to mons like Charizard, Infernape, Blaziken, Emboar, Blastoise, Feraligatr, Swampert, Empoleon and Greninja however, it's still fucking nothing.
Also:
Water > weak to 2 types, super effective against 3
Fire > weak to 3 types, super effective against 4
Grass > weak to 5 types, super effective against 3.

Because Game Freak still take retarded design decision concerning balance.
They give grass a lot of utility move like the powder/spore move or leech seed so to compensate they made grass a shitty offensive type and give them a shitty coverage to force you to switch and so give your opponent a "free" turn.
But in the same time they give water pokemon an easy access to ice move so they can easily deal with two of the three type that resist them so you don't need to switch even if your opponent send a pokemon that resist water.
They also make ice and rock good offensive type and compensate by making them shitty defensive type and giving them slow pokemon, but in the same time they give easy access to ice and rock move to pokemon with a less shitty defensive type like water and ground pokemon and by doing so made ice and rock pokemon basically useless.
The list is long, but basically Game Freak gave some type too many weakness compared to their strenght and gave some type with little weakness a way to deal with them.
