Even if it is just the gen 6 models, it does the job. I don't think gen 1 had many shitty animations (MegaZard X had shitty fire and flying animation, but I don't think megas are in the game).

You capture them many times.
Catching multiples is just one way to evolve. You can also train them in friendly gyms or battle in enemy gyms. Also apparently feeding and general care makes pokemon grow stronger. Perhaps evolve from this too.
