Well, Pt was more for internal consistency. That was what was agreed upon. Everyone always mentions the games by groups. They never mention games from separate generations by acronyms in the same place. It is always R/B/Y, G/S/C, R/S/E, D/P/Pt, B/W 1 and 2, and X/Y. The remakes are often mentioned separately or within the same gen they were introduced in. There is no reason to set Sun and Moon apart from the other games since they will always be grouped separately from the others. Everything else is just childishness at this point.

S was Silver before Sapphire, and R was Red before Ruby. Platinum is only called like that because it shares the same gen as Pearl. Besides, this nomenclature is mostly applied to game sets, so SM is perfectly clear, just like RBY, GSC, RSE, FRLG, DPPt, HGSS, BW(2), XY, ORAS and whatever. Nobody says "I'm playing pokemon S", they mostly use the full name, except with the remakes since they use 2 letters or B2/W2 since those too are unique.
