Gen V tried to "play it safe" and thus became the most boring, uneventful, and unnecessary Pokemon generation.

Compared to gen VI it's clear Gamefreak was just dragging its heels, reluctant to fully commit to a new Pokemon game so they just rehashed gen IV and added a bit more "wiggling" to the 2D sprites.
