Mapping for the first time and wanted some advice. I'm cool with scrapping this map and starting over, this is just to show elements I want in it.

It's the starting route, and it's supposed to be a burnt down forest that is regrowing. I want there to be a house surrounded by water that you can revisit once you have surf, or maybe a bridge to it to immediately visit it.

Also, if you know of any tile sets that I should download, posts those. Thank you.

there sure are a lot of leaves on those trees for a burnt down forest

The grass is shit. Why have one or two tiles of grass all on their lonesome
Grass should be treated as two things: an obstacle and a place to grind/capture wild Pokemon. In one you want to avoid the grass, which should be made difficult especially if you're going in a specific direction (ledges allow grass avoidance)
The latter forces large swathes of grass for running around in looking for wild Pokemon.

One or two tiles all on their lonesome does nothing and it irks me to no end when mappers do that.
>>
>>25746605 is right, you probably want a majority of the trees to be leafless if it was a recently burnt down forest. Also I would just put a bridge to the house. Other than that it looks pretty good.
>>
It would probably work better if the route were longer and you had to pass through the burnt part of the forest, then get to the "regrowing" parts near the end of the route. Right now it's just off to the side.

Funny enough everything i put into this mockup i think others have already pointed out by now. Route narrow and long, more grass directly in way to force encounters. I moved the little lake and house off road a bit. I agree with the others about changing up the tree models. You could try hiding a small offshoot route in them for fun. Something else to come back to later.

What is the house anyhow? Just an NPC with an item or service? Or is it abandoned/burnt out like the Pokemon Mansion? Has this forest fire affected the next route or town? Also what's the wild population of this route? Houndours and stuff or relatively unchanged from prefire?

Starting making this before I saw yours, really love the layout. I keep forgetting I can put big trees in the middle to fork the routes. Going to try and go your direction.

What I have so far. Going to make the trees more varied and create thinner paths.

Loving it so far, OP. However, you do have the problem of the trainer being able to go around and skip pretty much everything. Then again it DOES look a tad unfinished there.

Yeah working on that part, it's gonna be blocked off accordingly.

Looks good, how are you making these?

Looks like RPG Maker

Ahk, wouldn't mind making a desktop background that's all

If you're interested in JUST making maps and not putting them in a game, use Tiled. It's a lot more flexible.

When there's a forest fire, there is almost nothing left. Only big trees usually leave any trunk behind at all, and leaves NEVER survive. You should get rid of the solid wall of trees, if possible. I suggest making them only touch diagonally if you can do that. Here's a shitty drawing to show what I mean. The black spots would be the tree trunks.

>>25749510
Will do, diagonal should keep it as a barrier while not being overcrowded. Thanks.

Current version. Going to make some tree stump tiles, for now rocks are placeholders for a few of them.

Are you making a hack?

Yea, making a game in essentials. The idea is Pokemon have adapted typings to suit their environment, in this case a secondary forest that houses fire type Pokemon primarily. Pic related is a bug typed Bulbasaur, which will be based on assorted luck charms. First time doing this so it's a bit of a learning experience.
>>
>>25753583
damn that's really cool op, you working from a tutorial or something?
>>
>>25754168
Here and there. Essentials is pretty easy to pick up on, it's mostly just plugging in stuff.

Looks great. I'd either put the eastern cliffs immediately next to the eastern treeline, or just add more trees. Right now, it looks like the eastern portion should be accessible, and it would be pretty frustrating to find out it isn't.

Yeah, I want to make it a noticible barrier but also show a burnt down barren look to it. Maybe lots of charred tree stumps?
