Why does /vp/ always say Gamefreak hates Raichu, it's rejected etc because of Pikachu, when literally the opposite is true?
If Pikachu wasn't made the franchise mascot, Raichu would just be a regular electric type like Electrode or Magneton.
Raichu basically benefit's from Pikachu's popularity, and is one of the more well-known Pokemon thanks to being Pikachu's evolution.

Gamefreak really only puts a lot of focus on a few Pokemon (Pikachu, Charizard, Mewtwo, Lucario).
Raichu isn't harmed by Pikachu's status as series mascot. In fact, I think it benefits a little from it.

And if Pikachu wasn't the mascot Light Ball wouldn't exist in the first place, so it is not like Raichu is missing out on it.

How exactly? All I am saying is /vp/'s argument of Pikachu taking away from Raichu makes no sense.
Raichu isn't amazing, but it's not in this special category of being ripped off like people here say it is.

Magneton got a retconned type that remains unique (and good) to this day, an evolution, eviolite, good abilities, and exposure from being used by multiple rivals. Its had a way better life than Raichu.

Raichu has never had as much attention as half the Pikachu, for starters. The most notable Raichu in existence is Lt. Surge's Raichu, and even then, it's more of a passing phase for some people.
Most other Raichu in the anime are just backdrop 'mons who's only purpose is to fill in the emptiness. Generally speaking, it only appears once a season, usually as said background 'mon, or as some nobody's pokemon.
Meanwhile, any other Pikachu besides Ash's get more than just background settings, usually being a predominant aspect of an episode in the anime.
I could go on further, but it's a moot point trying to explain it to you any further than this.

Pikachu gets more attention, no doubt, but the point you're missing is that Raichu isn't receiving less attention by Pikachu being the mascot than it would otherwise.
If some other mon was chosen as the main mascot, Raichu would still probably be a background mon like most ofther gen1 Pokemon.

Terribly sorry, my good fellow. To elaborate on my previous post, the thread's OP was speaking on behalf of Raichu's competitive viability, as were most of those partaking in this thread. I was merely trying to point this out because the post I referenced was drawling on about Raichu's and Pikachu's appearances in the anime. Quite off topic, you understand.

I mean yeah, for some things, but if we're strictly talking about games, Raichu may as well be a stand-alone 'mon compared to Pikachu where its popularity is concerned.
Even as a standalone, Raichu would still get about as much love as every other 'mon that ISN'T Pikachu.

Raichu should have been the Electric/Dragon mega. Not Ampharos. Or Raichu should get an Electric/Steel mega, but it never will because it evolves with a thunder stone.
