What is /vp/'s opinion on Heliolisk/Helioptile? I'm not sure how to feel about them....
>>
>>25739917
Heliolisk is good. Could be better without the shapes and lines pasted all over it, which brings me back to why its better than Helioptile. Helioptile's proportions are awful and the lines and shit all over it are bad.

All that being said, I don't mind it too much, and I really like Heliolisk.

He's a godsend in UU.

With Dry Skin walling most Suicune sets and just tearing apart Swampert with Grass Knot, he's a must-have for the most scald-abusing tier on Showdown.
>>
I want to fuck, or be fucked by one
>>
>>25739917
It reminds me of Gex, so i like it.
>>
>>25739917
It's a nice design, but such an obvious setup for a later Mega based on its incomplete feel.

I wish its Def weren't so horrid since it could be a pretty usable Pokemon if it weren't so physically fragile.
HP 62 --> 82 (+20)
Atk 55
Def 52 --> 82 (+30)
SAtk 109
SDef 94
Spe 109
Total 481 --> 531 (+50)

Puts it on equal BST with Gogoat.
>>
Be is a very good, albeit situational, Pokemon in BatleSpot singles as well. He is great on sun teams with solar power, pairing well with CharY and, to a lesser extent Ninetails. The dry Skin set works well as an answer to Suicune and other water types, and he can even spread status if you want. Looks really neat as well.

Gets my stamp of approval.
>>
>>25739917
It's kinda weird that it doesn't get a single Fire type move. No, not even sunny day.

I mean, I'm not saying it should've been Electric/Fire, although if they wanted to I guess they could've done that -- It's just odd that a sun-based pokémon can't wield a fire attack.
>>
>>25739917
They're good, Heliolisk is often underappreciated in competitive, especially on weather teams.

I have one named Sheila
>>
I feel almost like Helioptile was meant for gen 5, but they didn't finish its design or held it back for whatever other reason.

There's that desert before Nimbasa city that would've been a perfect fit for it, and it could've been used in Elesa's gym directly afterward.

The area you find it in in X and Y is a little awkward....

Lizards have patterns on them you fuck. This is one of the cases where shapes and lines make sense. And they're still moderate.
>>
>>25740225
Just compare it to Pokemon from 3-stage lines. It more closely aligns with Frogadier than Greninja, and Fraxure than Haxorus. That is to say, it doesn't look fully formed.

>Just compare it to Pokemon from 3-stage lines.

It's not a three stage line and it doesn't need to be. Not everything has to be a fucking hulking monstrosity.

It's just as complete as Raichu.
>>
>>25740332
I'd still like to see Mega Heliolisk with Electric/Dragon typing with a Dragon-type -ate ability.
>>
>>25740332
The point I'm making is that it looks like the second stage from a three stage line, not like the final stage in a two stage line.

Raichu is really a three stage line, you know. I'd compare it to Pikachu too.
>>
>>25739917
My brother breeds rare bearded dragons, they are typically kind of red/orange. Since the line is based (I can only assume; if not they have similarities) on bearded dragons I like to pretend if Pokemon were real, then the one he gave me would be one of my bros. It'd be a shiny ofc cause of the red coloring and the rarity and it's name would be Meatball because that's what I named mine.

RIP Meatball. You're still alive to me.
>>
>>25740390
I think with it's frills down, you;d be right, but when it starts showing them off, it's easier to see how it's a fully realized final form, IMO.

Pichu does not fucking count. Babies are bullshit.

It looks just as complete as Azumarill, Clefable, Starmie, or any smaller final form. There is nowhere for its design to expand except into some big dinosaur shit that ruins its appeal.
>>
Heliolisk is my shoulder bro, that's how much I like the guy.

It's cool, but the whole line feels unfinished. It could use another evolution.

Helioptile's head is a bit too 'perfect sphere' for my tastes, and something seems off about its frills.

It's a clusterfuck design.
>supposed to be a solar panel lizard

>>
>>25739917
Design-wise, it looks alright but I'm not really sure what they were going for. I can't imagine the person who spent hours every day for weeks researching lizards, drawing out variations of the design, and then taking it to meetings with Masuda. It's just a lizard with a spiky neck.

Competitively, it's pretty fun. I've found that it's one of those things that in theory is fantastic, but when you try it it just dies before being able to do anything. It does make for a pretty fun counter to Smeargle and Kyogre in VGC with Electric Terrain and Dry Skin though.

Not being able to learn Solarbeam is pretty retarded, though. Give it Flamethrower too, it suffers from having awful coverage that every other Electric-type has.

>>
I hadn't played a single Pokemon game since gen II and then I started playing Y. 7 Badges in, Heliolisk is easily one of the strongest Pokemon on my team and not because of the stats, that I don't think are anything to write home about, but Dry Skin + Parabolic Charge + Ground attacks make it ridiculously strong.
>>
Helioptile is way to goofy cutesy for my liking. It was tough to justify the evolved form on my team because of that.

It's not bad here and there. Interesting ability and typing though. It can be useful in niche situations. Still, not an evolutionary family I would go out of my way to use.
>>
>>25739917
I like it but why the fuck is it Normal-type? I understand Pyroar is Normal so that it can get STAB on all those Normal-type sound moves (specifically hyper voice) but I really can't see any thematic reason for Heliolisk being part Normal. I feel like Gamefreak just threw it in for no reason other than having another unique type combo.
>>
I wonder what Heliolisk would have been like in competitive Gen V.
>>
>>25748561
The only thing I can really see that makes it standout from mono-Electrics is that it needs an external source (the Sun) to generate electricity. But Electric/Fire would've been more fitting.

right, i don't understand the normal typing either. its a little fitting, i just cant say why. Like >>25751862 said, a fire secondary type would have been awesome with dry skin. however having the sun up would make it an absolute monster with the boost in fire moves and solar power.

Pretty much echoing this. Hell even Electric/Ground would've made more sense because its a desert-dweller and gets Sand Veil.
