The first time I ever saw the D/P legendaries, I thought they were Zoids and I was really excited to see them combine.
Because it would either
1. Have fixed combinations of fusions that were arbitrarily determined, once again ignoring some pokemon in favor of the more popular ones, just like Mega Evolution
2. Have some algorithim by which any two pokemon can fuse, resulting in retarded designs and hilarious balance outliers just due to the sheer number of possible combinations.

People fell in love with Pokemon because of the idea that you were raising an animal to get stronger. Although it's autistic to think there's a real bond with Pokemon, the whole bond thing is part of the role playing aspect as well as a fundamental aspect of the anime- so mushing two Pokemon into one erases the idea that these things are living, and takes one out of the game. GF was pushing it with Kyurem and only got away with it because they're legendaries.

Seriously, what's the fucking point if the combination just removes a pokemon from being able to fight in that battle. Make it some kind of evolution where both pokemon meet the requirements and merge, and you can choose from all moves they've learned so far to make up their movelist.

Other franchises introduce fusion so they can say they have s different mechanic than pokémon.
Pokémon stays away from fusions, other than Unova Fug, and becomes unique in its own right as a franchise that doesn't have/need it.
If burst or fusion happens, pokémon loses the one staple that it has not needed in 20 years.

More effort should be put towards improving the formula and fixing games as they are, not throwing around flashy gimmicks that will be stale or abandoned in a few years.
