It was a plot mandated mega because of Archie. Sharpedo isn't a random Pokemon like Flygon where if they can't come up with something good in time, it just gets ditched or put on the backburner.
It's no worse than the majority of Gen IV Pokemon.

Mega heracross has a purpose to it, it's supposed to look like a hercules beetles and they show that off very well, even if it's a little silly looking. Ambipom is fine.

They should have elongated the back end of Sharpedo instead of the nose, so that he looks more like a torpedo. Also those weird strips of flesh at the back of the jaw just seem so out of place.

I like our residential half-shark as much as anybody, but they really messed up its mega.
If they'd just given it a tail and changed nothing whatsoever else about its design, that would've made me the happiest girl in the world.

It has grown on me a little, but I still can't believe that it isn't fake. It looks like failed fakemon design from deviant art. As a good majority of fan made megas add extra details to the point that the execution is a cluttered mess.

Considering the long snout and large dorsal fin, Mega Sharpedo clicked for me when I saw it as a submarine rather than a torpedo.

why? Megas aren't evolutions. It's not suposed to look like a different pokemon, but the same pokemon with extra shit bolted on.
I think the M-Sharpedo design style of taking the original mon and then giving it some spikes communicates perfectly what a Mega pokemon is supposed to be.
If he were what sharpedeo naturally evolved into he'd be garbage, but I don't think Megas are supposed to look like regular pokemon.
