The thing is if they'd just released it as an ingress skin it would have done well, but the time has passed and the hype and playerbase for ingress has moved on. I also don't see many people playing this to begin with because I can't imagine the playerbase for pokemon games would enjoy not having their favorite mons because they don't live in the right area.

So I can easily explain this, those pillars are just like the ones from Ingress, when you start the game you pick blue or red, then when someone who's on the blue team captures one of these pillars the blue team gets a bonus when checking into that area, the blue squares are just the ingame currency that you get for walking by it, the weird looking one near the trainer is an item.

I'm not a fan of the minimal UI design. It feels cold and impersonal and not like Pokémon at all. I also think the characters should be kids, like it always has been. That's part of the nostalgia draw. Having adults running around catching Pokémon feels weird. Overall it looks like a fan made "what-if" rather than an official GF product.

I don't get why this surprises anyone. It was never going to have "real" gameplay because that doesn't fit the model at all. The whole point of mobile games like this is to act a socializing tool first and foremost and not a "real" game. You tap your screen, get a shiny prize (in this case a Pokemon), and move on with whatever you were doing before. The landmark (in this case gyms) thing is of course in the hopes it'll encourage socializing and whatnot.
Nobody's going to be halfway driving to a ballgame or a date or whatever and stopping every few miles or whatever to do a 2-minute turn based RPG battle.

For example, in order to evolve your Ivysaur you need to keep catching Ivysaurs, because Bulbasaurs don't count towards EXP/evolution points. I've actually seen the design in a Hunger Games tie-in FtP app. To get powerful units, you had to combine a bunch of that particular unit. And then you had to combine a bunch of the higher levels of that unit to get to the NEXT power tier.
Think of it as a pyramid where the bottom is the pokemon you catch, and the top is the Pokemon you end up using. That's what we're dealing with here.
