I know it's the little bit of genwunner in me saying this, but nothing beats his art style for me. All of the cards I have with Sugimori artwork are always visible in my binder. That said, I definitely love his artwork in other gens too.
>>25690841
>>25690847
This is actually the last one I've made so far, and it was a request. The oldschool Gen II art wasn't preserved as well as Gen 1 ( though Red and Green's original artwork has only just recently surfaced in high quality )
>>25690849
Old games definitely had a different feel to the artwork that's really pleasant. Games like Pokemon, Harvest Moon, and Marvelous: Another Treasure Island all had these really soft colors that complimented the style really well. It's a shame it's fallen out of style.
>>25690902
I know what you mean. I think for me the whole 3d models and uniformity of digital art just makes it less interesting to look at. For me personally, at least. Pic related.
>>25690982
Yeesh... is that the norm for pokemon cards these days?
I haven't collected them since early 2000's, but I was considering starting again. But I would be mostly in it for the art, and if that's how they look then maybe I should stick to buying oldies.
pic related was the prettiest damn thing I've ever seen, I wish they had just an art book of the old school cards.
>>25691118
A lot of regular cards still have decent art, but virtually all EX's have shitty in-your-face 3d art with way too much clutter.
To be fair, they've always been 3d models, but they weren't always so... messy, I guess?
>>25691196
The biggest shame, though, is the lack of style variance in Pokemon you see. It's like, now that the brand has gotten big, they're afraid to get too creative.
Pic related is the same artist. You could argue she's gotten better from a technical standpoint, but I miss dem frills.
>>25691230
Not really "better", but obviously more cleaned up in regards to using computer to draw. Pic 1 was obviously hand drawn, and came out gorgeous.

Let the record show that this was Beta artwork from before the game's release.
>>25692359
Fucking same here. I used to absolutely LOVE pikachu back in the day because of this.
I don't care about any of /vp/'s imaginary "hurr shoving down my throat" shit, the only reason I dont like it now is because it's not that. Fucking cute as hell, rare, had a bit of an attitude to it.. It was perfect. I really cant put my finger on it, but something about the small round shape with the long tail always looked both cuter and swifter to me.
>>25692575
Call me crazy, but feel like the voice was also better back then. I know the voice actress has been the same since day one, but something about the way does the voices is different, a little less cute and slightly more obnoxious.
>>25692571
Was it really?
>>25692644
Yeah, you can tell because a lot of things don't match their final designs, like Charizard having flesh teeth and a single horn on it's head like charmeleon, or pikachu having a white belly and nub arms. I believe there was something about pidgeot that was different in beta that made it into artwork too but im not sure what it was.
>>25692679
Ah, found it. I guess it wasn't pidgeot's appearance, it was the name that got changed.
>>25692152

Why is Red on tippy toes?
>>25696388

>>25695969
There was spectacular art for games during 1996, both promotional and concept art, that it surprises me that not only did Sugimori use such an amateurish style ("i'll hastily copy Toriyama and sort-of watercolour it, fuck shading") but that GameFreak decided to go with it for their first go with this new franchise.Combined with the shit graphics, boring visuals, poor story and character development, and lack of content, I'm surprised Pokemon became such a huge hit. Glad it did, though
Not Sugimori, but a fun experiment I think
>>25696214
They didn't though?
>>25696388
>It was a living world for me. Now its just a series of games. Enjoyable games but not what gen 1 and 2 were. Good old days.
I agree wholeheartedly. There just isn't as much magic anymore. It feels like the series is constantly being rehashed rather than expanding on the existing world.
>>25696831
sugimori (hence official) did it as fanart for a magazine.
this isn't beta art, these mons were never planned to be in a game.
sugimori must have liked that early tyrannitar design so much that he decided to make it official and used it in GS
>>25696914
The art style definitely had more character back then. Even this Pidgeot looks like it could beat the living fuck out of you.
>>25696985
>And how you know that?
because he talks about this on his book?
>This is an illustration that was used as the cover for the April 1997 issue of the magazine Game Review (Micro Magazine Publishing Company). I miss this 80s cyberpunk, and it being in pokemon was great. everything about this guys art style and and color is great. It seems to be a mix of late 80s and 90s anime art. The new art is fucking monotone garbage to fit in with everything else. If they kept the cool character design and updated it a bit it would be great.

>tfw Pokemon used to be so imaginative, mysterious and rough looking
it was perfect. I wish Satoshi Tajiri would have kept being really hands on with the games after G/S/C then maybe it wouldn't be so plastic and generic as it became gen 3 and beyond.
>>25697317
I agree! I've heard people express the same sentiment about the cyberpunk feel, especially in Gen 2. Kinda dark, with dangerous monsters and the advent of some strange tech. This nasty Gengar >>25696739 looks like you just met him on waste ground in an industrial area or something, compared to later iterations.
Whereas the newer style is too generic animu with everyone living by the beach. This is not to rag on anyone who likes that stuff. Just trying to figure out why I prefer the old stuff.

(replying to only this because replying to all the rest as well would be overkill)
Thanks so much for the dump. I have fuckall to contribute so it feels really bad only being a leech. Oh well, hope you don't mind
Here's something to note, all that cool artwork from Red and Blue where the pokemon have more dynamic poses is actually the secondary artwork created for the international release of red and blue.
In Japan, the artwork for Red and Green had the pokemon in much more plain poses, most of these were given boring flat recolors and used as stock art for the anime. For the longest time, I thought this art was made specifically for yellow version because I had a Yellow Strategy guide that used this art, and it made sense to me since Yellow as attempting to be closer to the anime.
They did the same thing for FR/LG artwork.

I get mad every time I hear people argue about the Pokemon designs. Everyone focuses on the wrong issues. Yes, there were always object Pokemon. And yes, newer Pokemon tend to be overdesigned. But the bigger problem is that, despite being overdesigned, they lack essential details that gave the old Pokemon their character and charm. I always keep this pic handy to show what I mean.
The old art direction was just superior to what we have nowadays. I can't phanthom how >>25696018 can claim the new one is better. Just because it has pretty photoshop colors? I don't see it.

I also like fatchu a lot more than the modern standard design. While I haven't made any conscious notes on Pikachu's anime voice changing over time, I've been pleasantly surprised by everything about Pikachu in Pokken over the last few days. He has serious attitude in the game (fuck, he rips off some of Heihachi's moves and is mad as hell 90% of the time) and I feel like his voice acting in the game sounds better than usual, really going for a more gruff n' tough style (Pikachu Libre remains pretty cute overall).

I like both but I do not think mouse when I look at pikachu anymore
Did anyone ever have those toys that were modeled after the Red and Blue artwork, with the weird white airbrushing in random spots that were meant to mimic the art style? The air brushed white looked like shit, but I thought the models themselves were pretty neat.
>>25698045
That's an interesting read! I actually hadn't noticed stuff like the super flat shapes or lack of detailed toes and stuff. I'm not sure why some people prefer the newer style; maybe it's the ready-to-go cleanliness of it, or maybe they've been fed such a diet of generic anime that Sugi's older style just seems weird.
>>25697963
I wasn't aware of that! It's interesting to think the first batch might have been "this is basically what it looks like so the other artists know what they're working with" and then the next round was, ok, now it's in action! Sometimes the newer Gens feel like the stopped at the design sheets and didn't do round two for fun.
>>25698400
Personally I don't think the new style is better, just different
But as an artist, I always appreciate smooth andeasy to drawshapes
>>25698465
That's interesting, as an artist myself I can appreciate the smooth shapes, the kind of designs that animators favour. But when I draw I like a certain sketchy, textured quality to my lines. They can add a lot of life at times. Which is probably why the old Sugi appeals to me.

I think the "magic" of the old games was that the graphical limitations created a contrast between the cutesiness of the premise and the world.
Pokemon isn't dark by any stretch of the imagination, the overworld is quaintly idyllic and sub-rural. But the brightness was subdued by the utilitarian, uniform, top-down presentation and gameboy coloring. It was still cheery, but it was also almost melancholy, like being in a small town that never changes. Just trees and roads and little houses, going on and on.
So whenever you ran into something that implied any sort of history, or conflict, or that there was something left to discover, the impact was increased. It also made anything mysterious or even slightly dour in tone seem a little intimidating. But it was also refreshing. This is why Lavender Town, Mewtwo, and the Ruins of Alph are so well remembered. Mystery and Discovery were driving qualities behind Pokemon's entire concept, and they made sure to include those qualities in both Pokemon and the world around them.

Will they ever learn?

I still find those qualities on newer games. Unova for example felt both mysterious and beatiful.

>the whiplash energy in that hitmonlee kick.
The finished result is glorious. Would so buy a poster of that.

I think they kind of did for Gens III, IV, and maybe V. Then again perhaps the art was just in strategy guides and cards like it was in earlier generations.

Tempted to agree that it really doesn't feel the same to me either, though I can't say if that is the series itself or me growing up and experiencing burn out.
I still like a bunch of the new designs.

I believe I had and still may have some, Mewtwo at the least.

Cap looks good on James and whip feels fitting for Jessie.

You mean GF? I guess they have no reason to go back in style. It only matters to nostalgia fags like us now.

Always preferred that style Mew to the style we have now

Pretty great anon! Keep up the good work!
If phone wallpaper anon is still here, do you think we can get one of pokemon tower with marowak and the ghosts?

Think I like it better too, could be because that was the art they used on the first TCG card.

Looks like a middle ground between the old and new. The manner of shading is similar to the newer, digital stuff, but the colors and whites are more like the older art.
