This is the correct way to do it. Right when X/Y came out, I knew I wanted to train a Bergmite because it was cute as fuck and evolved into Avalugg, which would make a nice tank against the computer opponents, so I asked a kind anon who got it a few days early to breed me an egg and trade it over, hatched it and ran with it. I made a point to catch an Emolga as soon as possible too because I love that little fucker. Had two of my favorites right from the start. It's really fun to do this since it gives you a chance to run with pokemon you wouldn't otherwise have access to earlier on, or at all.

It seems like this is the case for most of the Gen IV cross evos. I remember vividly in game playthroughs I would want to use something like Yanmega, Mismagius, Weavile, etc. and you just can't get them until after the E4 or after picking up a rare item. I've never used the early normal types like Rattata, Sentret, Zigzagoon for very long and usually before they get a chance to evolve. This also applies to early bug types too.
Over the years I've actually neglected to use most grass pokemon, starters included (I've alternated between fire and water). Notable exceptions that I can think of are Venusaur from my run through LeafGreen and Vileplume with my recent run of Red version
