Sounds like a fun discussion for this thread. I'll start.
Larvitar is my favorite Pokemon. I'd say the evolutionary line is popular, but obviously Tyranitar gets the most love. Anyways, when I was a kid, all my games were bought used. At some point, I got Pokemon Gold used. The store didn't bother with saving over the original owner's file. Before I did that myself, I wanted to sneak a peak of the Pokedex. The first Pokemon to catch my eyes was Larvitar. I thought its design was so cool. So, I HAD to catch it. The Johto region immediately became this giant thing that had to overcome if I wanted to get Larvitar. I suppose it was something akin to a call for adventure--a challenge. Something no other Pokemon game was able to do for me.
Plus, Larvitar is a QT. I dig cute, NFE Pokemon.

You just gotta make cuts. Some people do it in a way that helps create a better balance or a better dynamic type wise and others just pick the favorites from the top to as far as they can go.
I did mine differently this time and went with Pokes that resemble things from my "real" "life". Like pets, certain animals from around where I live or from places I have been, or certain 'mons that relate to memories I have.
In the end I did have to cut some though. I mostly cut old pets that are gone now and some of the more rare ones.

I settle if favorites + comfy + whatever fits your goal. Let's say your goal in Pokemon goal is just traveling. Out of the Pokemon that you really like above all others, which ones do you see beside you, helping you overcome all the challenges that come with being on the road. For example, a water Pokemon would be pretty useful. I picked out Totodile because it's my favorite water-type. But not everything has to be about practicality. I just love Escavalier so picked that out, too.
Most people used the Team Alternatives slots, so if you really can't decide, use that as well and it doesn't really matter what the default is.

Well since you have a Maractus as well I'll share our story. There were cacti all over were I grew up. Not big ones, so no Cacturne, but lots of smaller ones. I'm very found of plants but I have a particular affinity for plants with thorns or needles so I always thought cacti were cool, plus I loved the flowers that grew on them.
So if the same were true in the Poke World I most likely would have caught a Maractus. And being the kind of kid I was I probably would have skewered myself on its thorns without noticing while trying to hug it. I'd probably say something like you smell like pennies, and then name it Penny. Bring it home to show my mom and have her freak out when she sees me covered in blood from all the scratches.
