fucking kek, and he considers hoenn linear?
>>
>>25673381
Johto and Kanto are on-rails for most of the game, there's just a few gym leaders that can be beaten in any order. So it would be more accurate to draw a straight arrow with a fork (and these forks end up joining up some time later before then end).

Besides, this thread is about where the player travels on the map, not what options they have.

It's not really the same thing, but this reminds me that I once traced a simple lines over the maps to see what the regions look like in the most simple way.

Gen 4 is probably the biggest mixed bag in the series. Sinnoh itself is a good example of that: Awesome region, awful Pokemon distribution within the region (even after Platinum fixed it up).

>Going to Olivine before Mahogany
Literally the worst way to play the Johto games. I don't care if GameFreak says to go that way, they're wrong. The story pacing is ridiculous if you go to Olivine first.
>>
>>25673244

This is genuinely the correct answer. Regions may have more complex designs than others, but there hasn't be any genuine choice as to where to go next in a long time. Every region since Hoenn is equally linear.

>>
>>25673257
Hoenn was the best. There was always a reason to go back to earlier towns or routes if you wanted to (berries, rematches, contests, secret bases).
>>
>>25673697
Sinnoh basically took the word linear and shitted on it. Don't know what games you were playing.
>>
>>25673725
That's wrong.
>>
>>25673730

Linear in the sense of being on a set path, whatever the layout of it is. Not in the sense of a straight path with no crossing or backtracking.

>>

Still wrong.
>>
>>25673697
Actually, Hoenn and Sinnoh give you some options in terms of how you want to reach earlier towns. For example, after defeating Norman you need to get to Mauville. Your choices include:
- The shortcut North of Oldale to North of Slateport, then up the Cycling Road
- Up to Rustboro, then through Rusturf Tunnel and Verdanturf
- Through Meteor Falls and Fallarbor, then down through the desert
- Down across the sea through Dewford, then Slateport (has a lot of trainers so you can go down this route if you need extra exp)

The only real thing that's different about Kanto and Johto is that the order you can get the badges in are non-linear for some of them. But that's not the same as "choosing where to go", like you imply.
>>
>>25673805
You can do Surge, Erika, Koga, Sabrina, and Blaine in any order as long as you do Koga before Blaine.
>>
>>25673779
I love gen 1 nigger, but I'm not blind by my nostalgia.
BW2, Platinum and XY has many optional places/secrets through the maps, RBY ONLY has the legendary birds domains (with Articuno standing obviously in your way when you get Surf, and Moltres being fucking obvious in the Victory Road, the only mildly secret one is Zapdos).
There's no "exploration" in the game, you don't have others options besides what is obvious.
>>
>>25673822
This.

I just did erika before surge.
>>
>>25673481
Sinnoh's map doesn't look bad looking at it this way, but the routes just felt so bland.
>>
>>25673805
You CAN skip, but there's absolutely no reason to skip a gym when you NEED to pass through the city.
For me this doesn't classifies as "option" or "exploration", you're just skipping a boss fight to wreck it without effort later with a overpowered team, if anything, it's bad game design.

Hoenn and Sinnoh aren't that much different when it comes to gym leaders either. You can skip Brawly and Winona in RSE and you can battle Fantina before Maylene and Crasher Wake in DP (although they changed the levels in Platinum).
>>
>>25673894
now make unova 1 point left and 2 ponit right and kalos a circle
>>
>>25673837
>There's no "exploration" in the game
Yes there is. You can choose to go to Fuchsia city via Celadon City. Or you can choose to go to Fuchsia via Lavender town. Or you can choose to go to Fuchsia City via Route 11. Or you can ignore Fuschia City and visit Saffron City first. Or you can ignore Saffron City and go to Cinnabar Island first. Every other region past Johto railroads the fuck out of you.

>RBY ONLY has the legendary birds domains (with Articuno standing obviously in your way when you get Surf, and Moltres being fucking obvious in the Victory Road, the only mildly secret one is Zapdos).

No, Articuno and Moltres are missable. I didn't even know Moltres existed in Victory Road my first few playthroughs.

>>25673894
Still wrong.
>>
>>25673889
The ability to say "I don't want to face Team Rocket right now, I'm going to go do something else" is more important than you think.
Every game since then has just said "you don't want to fight team whatever again right now? Well, fuck you, faggot. I'm not letting you go on until you do", which is absolutely maddening, especially in regions where the evil team never fucking leaves you alone like Sinnoh and Unova.
>>
>>25673907
>Every other region past Johto railroads the fuck out of you.
*after Sinnoh. Hoenn and Sinnoh had plenty of optional routes and ways to get to places. Then Unova turned the region into a literal circle.
>>
>>25673935
No. After Johto. After that there's no meaningful ways of progressing. Only different ways to backtrack.

A circle is a still a straight line.
>>
>>25673940
There's not really meaningful ways to progress in Johto either. There's I guess different ways to go in Kanto, but that's sort of post-game...
By the same token, Hoenn had a lot of places to explore. Yeah you backtrack, but there are things there. Lots of dove spots to go to little coves, all of Shoal Cave because of the tides, the area above Rustboro once you get Surf, and like the other anon mentioned, hunting down Secret Bases. It's not bad design if there's interesting things to do.
>>
>>25673907
>No, Articuno and Moltres are missable. I didn't even know Moltres existed in Victory Road my first few playthroughs.
And so is every legendary besides the Box legends post gen 3. Hell, to get the Regis you need to dive in a specific secret spot in a route and read braille to discover how unlock the Regis in the map (and even after that, you need to remember where are their ruins and do a puzzle for each one), it feels much more like a accomplishment.

RBY has the blandest puzzles in the gyms of the series, the routes also lacks the gimmicks that the later ones have and the only thing that you talk about them is how they offer two options to reach Fuchsia. I's not a bad game in anyway, Gen 1 is part of my childhood and I like to play the game sometimes, but replaying it just makes me remember how the later ones improved everything.

Sinnoh was not linear
>>
>>25673940
The mandatory progression may have been fairly linear but it gave you plenty of places to check out on your way there. Here's a list of optional areas in RSE:
Route 105-109
Route 111 (Desert)
Route 115
Route 123
Route 129-134
Abandoned Ship
New Mauville
Shoal Cave
Pacifidlog Town
Also, about half of Mt Pyre and most of Meteor Falls is entirely optional too.

That's more optional areas than Kanto and Johto combined. Just because a game doesn't tell you to explore, it doesn't mean you can't explore.

When did /vp/ get invaded with genwunners?
>>
So all regions are linear then.
>>
>>25673907
Articuno is right in the open in a room in a dungeon that you'd only skip if you thought outside the box and went looking for obscure alternate paths to the one the game is clearly telling you to take.
Moltres is just sitting there in an optional room in a non-optional dungeon you have no real reason to NOT explore properly.
>>
>>25675952
I seriously missed Articuno my first time through red. I found Zapdos though.
>>
>>25673244

Is this a meme? Has nobody here played Gen 5? Travelling through Unova does not resemble that at all. I just finished a run of BW1 and am at the E4 in BW2. Stop being faggots.
