DP had the best rival in the entire anime. Paul and Silver were the best rivals in anime and games respectively.
Paul was also the only one that got any meaningful development besides Gary, but even then Paul's was much more natural and well presented.

Is this really a surprise? DP was highly praised even when it was originally airing. The writers took what they learned from AG and then made and even better saga after.
May is my favorite female lead but there's no doubt Dawn got the best treatment of all the main girls.
I have to rewatch everything to make that call, I only remember the last two, and OS, the rest is just a vague memory.
But I will say OS is still best. I don't give a shit if Ash wasn't a good trainer, a fuck up that can be rude is more interesting than a competent goody goody.
BW and XY are probably tied for second worst for me though. BW started off interesting but dropped everything and dialed the repetitive shitty gags up to eleven, This carried over to XY, but at least XY didn't pretend it was going to be interesting at first. However XY did introduce an even wose version of contests, which I absolutely despise. Also, it's shipping fanbase is really obnoxious.
