We are talking about its elemental qualities. A bird might be a fire birb in pokemon. Rock is strong against the flying aspect of the burd because it can crush its wings or be too heavy. Fire is only effective because a pird is a normal animal, not because it can fly or relies on flight. A purd might as well have been a blazing extromophile but still be a burb. Its elemental quality is having wings, be able to fly and as such be weak to hard n' heavy load, not being a regular animal.

Dark: They're whimsical magical creatures immune to the power of darkness through magic
Bug: Fairies are guardians or inhabitants of the forest and therefore insects would be beholden to them or at least weaker in power to a magical creature of the forest.
Fighting: Same concept as psychic > fight. They're nimble magical creatures that just trump a simple physically adept fighting type
Dragon: Balancing purposes, also I think it may be something like the idea of ancient magic and sorcery being the counter to a huge mythical draconic beast. Like how powerful wizards would help to slay dragons.
Weaknesses:
Fire: A fairy, being a creature of the forest and having magical power based on nature would obviously be weak to fire based attacks considering they'd have a small frail form and reliance on nature.
Poison: Being small and physically weak or reliant on nature for their powers, poison would affect them considering they rely on the health of their environment.
Steel: A giant steel plate crushing a tiny fairy, the fact that processed steel doesn't naturally occur and that it symbolizes human progress, throwing off the need to be beholden to fae.
This is just my headcannon for how all these make sense. Feel free to disregard.
