The instruction manuals for the games mentioned he was a curious 11-year-old kid who gained an interest in Pokemon after his best friend, Blue, stopped playing with him and became a jerk.
If anything, he's just a kid who became interested in the call of a Pokemon trainer and helping Oak with his research, and likely ended up getting a little too carried away with training. This is probably why he ended up training too much at Mt. Silver to the point of not even letting his own mother know how he was.
