Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow are objectively the worst in the series in gameplay and world design, and art design was definitely weak. GSC had immediate improvements in gameplay and longevity. RSE made enormous bounds in gameplay (the addition of abilities being a key example), world design and introduced story as an alternate driver of progression. FRLG took what RBY did well and improved on it with modern features and design principles. I won't comment on DPPt because my experience with gen 4 is limited.

I'm not saying that Gen 1 was bad, but it wasn't the best either. FRLG>RBY though.

Well when I played Blue a couple weeks ago to transfer stuff to Sun or Moon because that's nifty, I picked Bulbasaur

But the aces of my team were Sandslash and Slowbro
