The X And Y characters were based on the classic Five Man Band trope of a hero, lancer, big guy, smart guy and chick. The protagonist and rival fit the first two while Tierno, Trevor and Shauna fit the latter three. It made them interesting archetypes, but not good characters

I wouldn't have minded this if they actually followed through with it and made Calem/Serena a challenging and competent rival. What I expected from X/Y was your standard rival with extras (the 3 other characters). Instead what we got was a subpar rival and 3 extras that try to make up for a shit rival rather than compliment a good one.
Calem/Serena sucked for two reasons. One was that they're complete pushovers - 3 of their mons don't even have full movesets in your final battle, one of them being their starter; but also because they felt soulless and like they lacked personality. I'm not saying they need to be dicks like Blue or Silver - Barry and Cheren were both pretty friendly but still great rivals, but Calem/Serena lack any personality at all.

Calem and Serena were soulless recreations of Brendan and May, who were soulless shells of unamusing bullshit back in Ruby and Sapphire
ORAS made Brendan and May into something a little less awful, but Hoenn always had the worst rivals up until Kalos 1-upped it with four god awful characters instead of two blank slates.Wally isn't as bad, but has zero prominence and results in being a piece of cardboard with an interesting motif

Ironically I don't recall XY even having anything like this.
You guys still remember the beginning of XY where you and your friends go through the forest together and everyone does their own thing? That was awesome, it really felt like you went exploring with everyone and everyone discovers something different.
Unfortunately, this never happens again and all you get are auto-pilot cutscenes. The whole concept had potential, but it just fell flat on its face way too early on.
